Venofer is the brand name for iron sucrose injection, an FDA-approved intravenous iron formulation. It consists of an iron complexed with sucrose, in a form that is stable, safe for intravenous delivery, and well tolerated by most patients. Venofer has been used in clinical medicine for over two decades and has an extensive safety record, particularly in the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease, the population for which it was originally approved.
At Ultimate IV and Wellness, the prescribed Venofer dose is drawn from a vial and diluted in 100 to 250 mL of normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride). The diluted solution is then infused intravenously over a controlled period. The saline diluent ensures that the iron is delivered slowly and evenly, prevents vein irritation, and maintains isotonicity, reducing the risk of side effects.
Once in the bloodstream, the iron from Venofer is taken up by the reticuloendothelial system — primarily the liver, spleen, and bone marrow — where it is stored as ferritin or used directly in the production of new hemoglobin. This process begins within hours of the infusion, though measurable improvements in ferritin and hemoglobin levels typically appear on lab results within 1 to 4 weeks.
